On Sunday morning I took some photographs of the local beach my family
visits most often (two beaches really, but they're adjacent, seperated
by about an hour's walk).
I have just uploaded six of these photographs. Comments welcome - for
example, which are your favourites and (for afpers who don't live near
a good beach) exactly how jealous do they make you?

(These will not be on my website permanently, so be quick!)

Not very.
I mean, I'm no fan of beaches, but in SW Scotland we've got a lot of
beaches that look very similar. :-D

Get rid of the width=100%. In Firefox it stretches the pics on my screen and
makes them pixelate.

Not really a beach person.

Those are lovely :-) I think the second one (Balgowan looking North)
is my favourite. The sun on the sea is beautiful in all of them.

Thanks. :-)
"Balgowan looking North" is a bit too dark on my monitor, but it looks
very much better on my Dad's monitor, which I suspect is more like
yours.

The sand looks grey in your pictures, and it's grey here around Vancouver
too. Having grown up in England, I was used to yellow sand, so the first
time we went to a beach here it was quite a surprise; but perhaps it's grey
that's the norm and yellow the anomaly.

The "Balgowan looking North" is my favourite too - very romantic, as if I
could envisage it on a post card or holiday brochure. It doesn't
particularly look dark on my monitor either, it's absolutely breathtaking,
I love it!

I've also seen white and black. Hawaii has lots of black sand beaches.

Round here, the rocks are white[1], the shingle is black[2] and the
sea[3] is grey. We rely on the green slimey stuff growing all over
the sea defenses to add a touch of colour. The sand is vaguely sand
coloured though, except when it's mud, in which case, it's the same
colour as the sea.

If you're lucky enough to find a beach around here with sand instead of
rock, there's a chance it'll be blue and purple. Maybe green in spots.

Your weather gives you an incentive not to risk exposing yourself to
UV rays in the first place....
We follow the Scottish custom of rolling eggs down hills until they
break - in our case, chocolate eggs down sandhills. One of the
photographs that I didn't upload shows where mine landed. I play by
the rules that you can't deliberately aim for a hard object (such as a
tree root), but if you can, uh, _arrange_ for the egg to
_accidentally_ hit a hard object, that's OK.
(A lot of people are _much_ more liberal in this area.)

Nope yellow is normal for Aussie beaches, but because we have so much
beach any colour could be normal. I have been led to believe that
England had lots of stoney or pebbled beaches, I didn't realise you
also got sand.

I like the texture of the rocks on the top one. I'm not a great fan of

They make me jealous, but I've got a pretty good view as well. These are
the grounds where my office is located. There are some pictures of a couple
of my colleagues and their kids as well. I've taken these over the past
couple of weeks. I've actually got some better ones, but I think they're
still on the camera at work.

Balgowan is a very nice beach and the Carybdea rastonii think so too.
The rocks are good for playing on if you're a child. There are little
caves there, not very impressive to an adult, but good enough to
excite a kid.
Plenty of memories in those beaches. I had to go to swimming lessons
at Balgowan.

Those babies follow me all over and I'm not sure why. I don't feed them. I
think I ought to be paid extra for goat walking. :)

It's on top of a mountain. It's not a very big mountain however. We're at
the foothills of the Appalachian chain, so there's not much height left by
the time they get here. The view off the mountain isn't too good though. We
have way too many crazed developers running amok and spoiling the natural
landscape. :\

I don't, but Google threw up a good one:
http://www.gly.uga.edu/railsback/sands/sand294.html
Middle Cove actually has more rock than sand, but what's there covers the
range of colours pretty well. Most beaches are one main colour with a few
specks of other stuff thrown in.

Where you do get sand in England, it's yellow - "Come unto these yellow
sands", and so forth. The sand on the beaches we go to most often was put on
top of the rocks that form the true coastline after it was dredged out in
the thirties (?) to make a nice deep shipping channel into the harbour. It
was startlingly grey when we first came here in the seventies, but I think
it's taking on a slightly yellowish tinge now - perhaps it's something to do
with exposure to the air; or perhaps I'm just used to it at last.

Thanks. I wouldn't call that sand, though, it's more gravel. In the UK,
most beaches are either sand (yellow, as Leslay says) or pebbles.
This is the beach we used to take family holidays near when I was
a kid:
http://www.picturesofengland.com/pictures/500/Mablethorpe_11 11497767.jpg
and this is a pebble beach, from Brighton.

You did see the scale, didn't you?

Um, yes, it says 1cm. That means it's about half the size it appears
on my screen. So it looks like fine gravel.

IIRC, the boundary between sand and gravel is at an average grain size
of 2 mm. Most of the grains in that picture look much smaller, maybe
around 1 mm. A few look significantly bigger, but without counting, they
appear to the the exception.

OK, fair enough. I had no idea what the technical definition of gravel is
(or sand, for that matter). It still looks like fine gravel to me, but if
you
tell me it's sand, I'll believe you.

I'd call that pebbles. If the pieces of rock are big enough to penetrate
your skin, I wouldn't call it sand.

I'm Australian - my idea of a mountain is your idea of a little bump.
Adrian.
P.S. I've taken down the beach photographs now, as I think everyone's
had a fair opportunity to see them.
